Around & About
Waterville Waterville is the nearest village - it sits on a sliver of land between Ballinaskelligs bay and Lough Currane (which lends its name to the original Irish name for the town - An Coireán). A tiny village, it is known worldwide for its golf course and tourists on the scenic Ring of Kerry routinely stop to have their photos taken by the statue of Charlie Chaplin who spent his summer holidays in the village for 40 years. Many of the pubs have entertainment in the evenings, and it's really worth checking the programme at Tech Amergin Arts Centre. This is an amazing Arts centre and it regularly hosts international-caliber artists for concerts, plays and exhibitions. |
Valentia Island Worth a day trip - take the car ferry from Reenard Point (near Cahersiveen) to Knightstown. Check out the dinosaur tracks, the slate quarry and see where the first cable was laid to America. You must definitely eat some Valentia Ice Cream. Return via Portmagee. Portmagee (pictured left) is a very pretty (but still authentic) working fishing village. Check out the Moorings for music or the Fisherman’s for a nice pint and good food. |
