Walks
This area is a walkers' paradise. There are many Kerry Way routes - marked with a little yellow walker. These are old roads no longer in use and are for the most part well surfaced. Now and again however, the route veers away from what looks like the old road into less welcoming surfaces, so best to go prepared. Click here for maps and information about Kerry Way Routes.
You can walk sections of the Kerry way easily from the base of the house in Tooreens.
Capall River - Cloghvoola - Glanbeg
You can walk (or drive) to the road which crosses Capall River and follow the Kerry Way signs to the top. On the way, the trail takes a sharp turn and the going gets very wet and boggy, but the views at the top are spectacular. Walkers doing the Kerry Way follow this route over the top and down the other side (it's the Dromod to Capall River trail, going the other direction).
For less enthusiastic walkers, following this road to it's natural end (before it takes off into the bog) is a beautiful ramble.
Tooreenduneen - Eagle's Hill - Windy Gap
You can easily walk down the road and pick up the Kerry Way signs following the Capall River to Caherdaniel stage of the trail. Again, the trail gets extremly boggy so it's one to try when the weather has been dry for a few days. The views from the top are absolutely spectacular but we've found that doing the walk from the Caherdaniel side is much easier going. The inclines are just as steep, but the going underfoot is dryer. I'd suggest driving round almost to Castle Cove, taking a left (there's a Church indicated on the map) and picking up the Kerry Way trail by backtracking to the junction where it divides (signposted Sneem). That way you miss the worst of the rough walking and pick up a proper old road. It's a fabulous walk.
Coomnahorna West-East
This is another favourite walk of mine. Take a left on the Caherdaniel road and drive almost until you run out of tarmac road. Park somewhere you're not obstructing the narrow road or access and follow the old road up the mountain. The old road has a great surface and the view are wonderful. The road continues into a bog - if the weather has been dry, you can continue along the road and across the bog to see down into Coomrooanig Lough.
Coomcallee
This walk is up the mountains directly behind the house. Walk to the end of the road and ask permission at the house at the end. If given, walk through the farmyard and veer left, following the old road. This old road leads all the way to the top where you have spectacular views back towards Killarney, left towards Kenmare and right sometimes as far as the Blasket Islands! It's worth marking the end of the road by tying something to the fence post nearest the end - it's easy to get distracted walking along the top and forget where you started.
This is also a walk that is rewarding from beginning to end, so if you are not a serious walker, just go as far as you feel like - there are wonderful views all the way.
